Ectopic pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancy. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of chorionic villi protruding from a fallopian tube during an ectopic pregnancy. This is 40 days into a 35 year old woman's term. In an ectopic pregnancy the embryo implants outside the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube (oviduct), as here. Chorionic villi (the club-like structures here) form in the placenta during preg- nancy to allow the foetus to exchange nutrients, gases and waste with its mother. Ectopic pregnancy is a life-threatening condition which requires the immediate surgical removal of the foetus. Magnification: x800 at 6x7cm size.
